Disaster Recovery Burn-Out Prevention

It is natural for us to extend help in a crisis. It is also natural to get tired, when stress is prolonged. Because of this, recovery from mass disaster tends to follow a very particular pattern. Zunin and Meyers were the first to identify how communities go through different stages of healing.

What to look for, What to Expect

  • HEROIC:  From impact after disaster strikes.  Lasts for about one week.
  • HONEYMOON: Lasts several weeks and there is a sense of the community “pulling together.” In times of mass-disaster, there may be media attention and support from communities around the world.
  • DISILLUSIONMENT: Can last from about one month to a few years.  All the attention from media (and support from the world community) is gone; things take longer, glitches in the system become apparent and or the system fails, and questions are unanswered.  Stress becomes apparent as we begin to take stock of our losses. Watch out for rumors, frustration, fear and short tempers.  This is a time of radical transformation and constant tests of character.
  • RECONSTRUCTION: Final stage with realization of what has been experienced and what each person and / or community can do to restore the community at large. Can also last from one month to three years in some communities.

S-Share Talk to friends, and listen to others with the ears of your heart. Share your insights, learning and healing with others

T- Try Again. . .and again Take time for Self-care Tend to-and-befriend yourself and others.

Self-Connection is running free movie nights . . . . the movie nights are intended to be fun and to be a break from the chaos, but also they are fundraisers for the two organizations that Self-Connection has chosen to support: the Food Bank, and the Distress Centre.

“The food bank is overwhelmed with requests because of the number of fridges, freezers and homes that lost power. The Distress Center is fielding a large increase in calls from people who are concerned about the financial implications, where to live while repairs are done, how this impacts their ability to work, and how their children are responding and the emotional and stressful toll it has taken on them.”

http://gallery.mailchimp.com/b4056ed3f5cecf0710c86639b/images/food_bank.jpg   There are many ways in which we, the people of Calgary, can offer our support to the victims of the flood and to the organizations helping the victims of the flood.    For our part, Self Connection has decided to offer its support to the Food Bank and to the Distress Center.    Both of these organizations are in dire need of help.   The food bank is overwhelmed with requests because of the number of fridges, freezers and homes that lost power.  The Distress Center is fielding a large increase in calls from people who are concerned about the financial implications, where to live while repairs are done, how this impacts their ability to work,  and how their children are responding and the emotional and stressful toll it has taken on them.   Self Connection is happy to help such a wonderful resource.

So, as a way of offering some momentary relief and perhaps some fun and laughs, we are showing a series of movies that we are calling the ‘Take A Break’ Movie Series.    There is no cost to attend, but we do ask that you bring a donation for the Food Bank, and if inclined, you can leave a cash donation for the Crisis Center.

PLEASE CALL THE STORE AT 403-284-1486 if you are planning to attend so that we can monitor the # of seats.

We will be scheduling more films to show and are open to suggestions.     IF THERE IS A MOVIE THAT YOU THINK WOULD BE FUN TO WATCH, let us know.

Note that if you wish to make a donation to the Food Bank, you don’t have to wait until movie night….we have a table at the front of the store where you can leave any non-perishable food items.

A career-spanning documentary on the Rolling Stones, with concert footage from their “A Bigger Bang” tour.   Scorcese filmed the Stones over a two-day period at the intimate Beacon Theater in New York City in fall 2006.   Cinematographers capture the raw energy of the legendary band.   A must-see for any Jagger/Richards fans.   And a great selection for our 12 ft wide screen and 5:1 Digital Audio system.
